ENO Celebrates 8 Black Trailblazers in the Outdoors
A celebration of Black History in the Outdoors Outdoor Afro, the nation’s leading, cutting edge network that celebrates and inspires Black connections and leadership in nature, has highlighted notable Black historical figures, places and recent achievements of Black people related to outdoor recreation. We encourage you to follow @outdoorafro on Instagram and read through the entire series. Matthew Henson Matthew Henson was born in Maryland in 1866, the son of free sharecroppers. He was orphaned at the age of 7 or 8. Henson found work as a cabin boy and seaman and did so for several years before being hired as a valet on one of Peary’s survey expeditions. This began a decades-long working relationship with Peary. Henson’s skills were unmatched, and he made a total of seven voyages to the Arctic with Peary. On April 6, 1909, Henson became the first person to set foot on the North Pole. Four Inuit (Indigenous people of northern Canada), whose names were Egingwah, Ootah, Ooqueah, and Seegloo, assisted Peary and Henson. Charles M. REI Honors Top Vendor Partners of the Year
Eagle’s Nest Outfitters, Inc. receives top accolade; divisional winners are Kühl, Thule and Osprey Packs SALT LAKE CITY – Each day, leading outdoor retailer REI offers the top gear and apparel from more than 1,300 established and up-and-coming brands. To recognize those valued partners, REI named its 2014 Vendor Partner of the Year awards during the Outdoor Retailer Winter Market trade show. Eagle’s Nest Outfitters, Inc. (ENO) was presented with the annual Vendor Partner of the Year awards, while Kühl, Thule and Osprey Packs were named divisional winners.The Vendor Partner of the Year awards program was established by REI in 1993. Each year, companies are nominated by the co-op’s three merchandising divisions – camp/travel, actionsports and outdoorwear – for their efforts to build a strategic and successful relationship focused on meeting member and customer needs, and to bring quality, innovation, outdoor stewardship and performance to the industry. Throwing back to their university years, ENO re-introduces nationwide college brand ambassador team. Eagles Nest Outfitters (ENO), creators of nomadic outdoor and travel gear, is reliving the glory days of college by proudly announcing the re-launch of their ENO College Brand Ambassador Program. Already a commonality on campuses nationwide, ENO looks to strengthen their grassroots approach to spreading hammock love in a university setting with their new college ambassador team. Originally launched in Jan. 2012, the company went back to basics with their current version of the program. “Aside from creating the best hammocks on the market, ENO likes to have a good time, and we wanted our College Ambassador Program to reflect that,” said Amy Allison, Event Coordinator for ENO. “We’ve stripped the program down to the simplest, yet most effective, version to really put us on the university map.” The new program, that is actively searching for ambassadors for the Spring ’15 semester, will begin in 10 universities for its first year with plans to expand in future semesters.
